On Friday, May 4th at 10:00 AM, a crowd of YMCA members, staff, leadership, and volunteers gathered outside of the Habersham YMCA, the YMCA of Coastal Georgia’s Flagship location, to officially break ground on the Mason Trail & Outdoor Education Center. This quarter-mile paved trail will run along the property line of the Y and meet up with Habersham Street sidewalk for longer distance running and walking.

The Mason Trail & Outdoor Education Center will consist of a quarter mile paved trail, which will be open at the end of this month. In the fall, the Outdoor Education Center will take shape with benches, a fruit orchard and a community garden all being added. This lighted trail will be open for the community to use. An official opening ceremony will be held this fall, once the outdoor education space is complete.  West Construction Company will serve as the general contractors with Coastal Civil Engineering providing the engineering for the project.

David Mason has served in various roles on both the Habersham YMCA Board of Directors and as a Corporate Board Member for over 20 years. His dedication and passion for recreation and wellness is evidenced in his daily visits and more than 27,000 miles logged on the treadmill. While Mason is a committed and proud Habersham Y member, he has always been a bit jealous of the outdoor trail at the Islands Family YMCA.

“I had planned on leaving the Y money, but I decided I was going to do this track right now,” shared David Mason, Habersham Board Member. “I had heard how that track [Islands Family Y Track] had impacted their members and especially the community. I only hope and pray that this track will have the same effect on our members and our local community,” Mason explained.
