Tybee Island Marine Science Center

After 8 years of planning and design, the Tybee Island Marine Science Center is complete. The new 10,000 SF facility will house the operations and serve the mission of the organization through education and stewardship of our ecological resources to the 50,000 annual visitors. The building is constructed from a complex combination of cast-in-place concrete piers, a post-tensioned concrete slab, structural steel, wood framing, and impact-rated glass. Great care was taken in the design of the project to remain sensitive to the coast and to help minimize its impact on the environment, including custom tinted glass to reduce the impact on sea turtles during nesting season and a rainwater cistern will help offset the facility’s water consumption.
