Event Celebrates the Student’s Skills Success and Promoted Skills Awareness
(SAVANNAH, GA) – The AGC Southeast Georgia Skills Challenge took place November 13, 2024 at Bulloch County Agricultural Complex. 16 schools, 100 student competitors, and 100 student observers were all in attendance. The Skills Challenge Competition provides an electric game-day atmosphere for student competitors across the state. Skills Challenges help address the labor shortages facing the industry.
This year the overall Alliance Cup Winner was earned by Camden County High School. Camden County – also won first place in blueprint reading and welding. They earned second place in plumbing, welding fabrication, and masonry. Each of our local high schools took home significant recognition. Statesboro High School won first in Team Works building a miniature home complete with electricity. Team: Jack Blackmon, Jerry Alguilar, Blaine Akin and Nathan Waters, Coached by Josh Hall. They also won first and second place in cabinet making, second in roofing, and third in plumbing,
Matt West, President of West Construction, celebrated the event’s success saying, “This 4th year of the skills challenge. This year is the largest to date and the demand is at an all time high for construction skills in the workforce. We are so pleased to partner with other local partners, Choate Construction and Ace Electric each year to bring this competition to Statesboro.” West recognized Coach Josh Hall from Statesboro High School, their Construction Pathway Teacher, who is incredibly proud of his student competitors and has made a significant impact as the 2023 winner and consistent source of support for the future workforce students by saying, “Coach Hall brings enthusiasm to his classroom and expertise to the students of his programs. Instructors like him make the Skills Challenge a success.”
The AGC Southeast Skills Challenge is a part of a larger series of Skills Challenges that take place nearly simultaneously each fall across the state. The AGC Georgia Skills Challenge Series has over 2,100 students (competitors and observers) attending from 104 schools. This annual series is hosted in Augusta, Columbus, Gainesville, Macon, Marietta, Moultrie, Rome, and Statesboro. Students demonstrate the skills they have learned, competing for excellence in carpentry, electrical, masonry, plumbing and welding. Please find the overall winners listed here.
The core competitions are, Carpentry, Electrical, Masonry, Plumbing, and Welding. Winners who hold membership in SkillsUSA, will advance to compete at SkillsUSA Georgia’s State Leadership & Skills Conference (SLSC) in February 2025.
